ServicesIndividual Health Insurance

Individual Health Insurance for St. Petersburg Residents

When you pay for your own coverage, a low monthly price can still turn into an expensive plan. We compare options from several carriers and total up each one across twelve months, so your choice holds up through December.

Coverage for one person, picked with the whole year in mind

An individual plan is health coverage in your name only. It's a good match if you work for yourself, you're between jobs, you work part time, you left work early, or your employer has no group plan to offer.

Most people shop by premium. That's the number on the bill every month, so it's easy to see. But a low premium often comes with a high deductible, and you pay that before the plan pays much. We look at premium, deductible, copays and the out-of-pocket max side by side. Then we ask how you actually use care. Two doctor visits a year and one regular medication is a different picture than a planned surgery.

We are an independent insurance agency, which means we aren't tied to one carrier. We compare plans across companies and tell you plainly which one holds up for the way you live.

What we go over with you

Full-year cost estimate
We add twelve months of premiums to what you'd likely pay out of pocket. That gives you a real number to compare, not just a monthly one.
Doctor and network check
Tell us the doctors and hospitals you use. We check whether each plan has them in network before you enroll, so you aren't surprised at your first visit.
Medication coverage
If you take regular medications, we look at where they sit on each plan's drug list. A drug on a higher tier can cost a lot more each month.
Subsidy and savings check
Depending on your income, you may qualify for help paying your premium through ACA Marketplace Plans. We check that first, since it can change which plan is the better buy.
Teeth and eyes, if you want them
Most medical plans leave out adult dental and vision care. If that matters to you, we price Dental Insurance and Vision Insurance next to your medical plan so you see the full monthly total.

Signs it's time to look at your own plan

  • You're leaving a job

Losing employer coverage usually opens a special enrollment window. It has a deadline, so it's worth looking at options right away.

  • You went out on your own

Freelancers and small business owners with no staff need their own coverage. A plan built for one person is often the simplest fit.

  • Your renewal notice went up

Carriers reset their prices and doctor lists each year. Last year's best value may have slipped down the list without you noticing.

  • Your deductible scares you

If you avoid seeing a doctor because of what you'd owe first, your plan may not match how you use care.

  • You moved to the area

A move to St. Petersburg or a nearby town like Gulfport or Pinellas Park can qualify you to enroll outside open enrollment. Networks differ by county, so your old plan may not carry over.

How a consultation works

  1. 1

    You call us

We ask a few basic questions: your age, the county you live in, your income range, and the doctors and medications you rely on. It takes a few minutes.

  2. 2

    We pull the plans

We gather plans from multiple carriers that fit your situation. We check networks and drug lists before we bring anything to you.

  3. 3

    We walk you through them

By phone, by video, or at our office, we go over each option side by side. You see the premium, deductible, out-of-pocket max and a rough yearly total for each.

  4. 4

    You decide and enroll

There's no pressure to pick that day. When you're ready, we help you finish enrollment and tell you what to expect from the carrier next.

What moves the price of an individual plan

Your premium is set by the carrier, not by us, and the consultation costs you nothing. We are paid by the company you choose, not by you. Here is what shapes the number you'll see.

Your age
Premiums rise with age. A 55-year-old will usually pay more than a 30-year-old for the same plan.
Plan level
Bronze plans cost less each month but make you pay more before coverage kicks in. Gold plans charge more up front and less when you use care. Silver lands between the two, and it's often where extra cost-sharing help applies.
Income and subsidies
If you qualify for a premium tax credit, your monthly cost can drop a lot. This one factor can change which plan is the best value.
Network type
HMO plans with tighter networks tend to cost less. PPO plans give you more choice of doctors and usually cost more each month.
Tobacco use
Carriers can charge tobacco users a higher premium. We'll tell you how that affects each plan you're looking at.

Questions about getting your own plan

Something not covered here? (727) 349-5211

When can I sign up for my own coverage?

Most people enroll during open enrollment, which starts in the fall and runs into winter. Any other time, you need a qualifying life event, like losing coverage through work, moving to another county, getting married or having a baby. Those windows only stay open for a set time, so call us soon after the change.

Is it cheaper to buy straight from the carrier?

No, your premium stays the same. The carrier sets the price and pays us when you pick its plan, so our review costs you nothing. What you get from us is a side-by-side view of several carriers.

Should I just take the cheapest premium?

That can work if you're healthy and rarely see a doctor. If you take a medication every month or need ongoing care, a higher premium with a lower deductible may cost less over the year. We figure both totals so you can compare.

Do I have to come in person?

No. Most clients meet with us by phone or video. If you'd rather review the plans together face to face, you're welcome at our office.

What if my spouse or kids need coverage later?

Then you'd look at a different type of plan. Our Family Health Insurance page covers how we compare plans for more than one person, and events like a wedding or a new baby usually give you a chance to switch.
